PostGIS in Action: PostGIS Case Studies

PostGIS is used by organizations large and small and has garnered a lot of commercial support. Its ease of use, unmatched performance, feature set, scalability, ease of deployment, and ability to integrate in most any environment makes it a no-brainer solution for most GIS work involving high end analytics and integration with other business processes.

• CartoDb is a PostGIS cloud service offering a REST-like API for doing spatial queries. The code for the platform is open source. You can check out some descriptions of publically available examples in CartoDb Blog
• National Oceanagraphic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hosting Environment utilizing PostGIS and GeoServer.
• Sharding Postgres with Instagram Instagram chose to build on PostgreSQL because of PostGIS - check out page 39 of the slides. Instagram sold to Facebook for 1 billion dollars.
• Ride the City - New York City

  This uses pgRouting (which means PostGIS as well), OpenStreetMap

• FCC National Broadband map. This is an OpenGeo case study write-up.
• Portland Trimet Transit system This another OpenGeo write-up.
• FourSquare mapping and reverse geocoding
• MangoMap is a cloud-service for making and sharing maps including those with statical visualization features. Well suited for those with no programming skills.
• iSpatial ( whitepaper detailing use of PostgreSQL/PostGIS for backend ) is a web-based collaborative framework that leverages Google Earth and Maps in a flexible, task-based approach to solving complex problems.
